Learn how to create dynamic, data driven Web sites using today's most popular technologies. This course will teach you the basics of Structured Query Language (SQL) and how to use SQL to interact with databases from within your Web pages. Students have the opportunity to work with examples and exercises built with .NET, JSP, PHP, ColdFusion, and even classic ASP. Students will learn to build queries, retrieve data, and display results on their pages. The course will also teach students to use user-submitted form data to update databases, process logins, and more! Students will even have a chance to experiment with advanced techniques such as state management with session and cookies so they can build persistent site recognition and shopping carts.

By the end of the class students will be able to:

  • Understand the basics of Structured Query Language (SQL)
  • Learn to perform CRUD (create, retrieve, update, and delete) operations
  • Learn the principles of server-side programming.
  • Learn to retrieve data and output to the client browser using multiple environments
  • Learn to work with user form input to query and modify data
  • Learn to apply common development techniques such as validation and data

Students who successfully complete the class exercises and/or Capstone project will receive the WestLake Certification along with real-world sample code.

  • Prerequisites:
    Students should have a strong knowledge of HTML, particularly HTML forms, and be comfortable with client-server applications such as the ones covered in WestLake's Advanced HTML class. Experience using database-driven applications is helpful but not required.
